The specs were great, the newly discounted price was right and the appealing photos all led me to believe I had found a winner, but expectations fell flat when the package arrived.
Let me start with the positives: the jacket is light weight and a slight stretch in the fabric makes movement easy. The jacket is warm but I'd consider the insulation level to be mid-weight, making it versatile as a single go-to jacket for anything from day to day wear to skiing.
Now onto the negatives: the fit is downright odd, as other reviews have mentioned. I believe this is due to the pit zips and the stiff type of zipper used, which causes the jacket to flare out sideways in an awkward way around the waist. I'm 6', 170lbs and I ordered a large, which seemed to be the right size, had the cut not been so weird.
Setting aside the jacket's near stellar specs, the overall quality from the standpoint of material feel, construction details, zipper hardware, fit/tailoring, color highlights and generally cheap look was way, way below what I was expecting from an MH jacket originally retailing around $400. I have a 5 year old MH Cutaway jacket that's built link a tank, performs flawlessly in virtually every kind of weather and activity and looks barely worn after repeated washings and years of rough treatment. I was expecting the Vertical Peak jacket to be in a similar league but I was disappointed and ultimately returned it to MH.
I'm not sure if the jacket's design was a victim of corporate cost cutting or a loss of corporate vision and direction, but I sure hope it's temporary and isolated to some past season models.
Despite my issues with this jacket, MH customer service has been excellent and the whole process was efficient and painless except for incurring the 2-way shipping cost, which ended up being all for naught.
Lesson: Try before you buy.
I do not recommend this product.

I wore this jacket in Finland throughout the winter and as far as warmth, it was great and was not drafty down to -20F including plenty of mid-layers. I'm 150lbs, 5'10" and wore a medium. It was easy to layer underneath without appearing too baggy. The sleeves were too short to make the thumb loop unusable. The powder skirt easily rode up requiring constant adjustment. While skiing the jacket held up well and had good ventilation. However, I ended up tearing the wrist strap off without much effort while trying to fit it over my gloves. This would be a great jacket if the fit was a bit better and had a bit sturdier construction. I ended up returning it and wouldn't recommend it unless the size fits your body well.
I do not recommend this product.

I am 5'10" and 150lbs. Brought the Medium size jacket for snowboarding this season. Very lightweight, but extremely warm and comfortable. Great mobility. Kept me warm in temps down to the mid teens and worse windchill. In cold driving rain, the jacket gets a little heavier but keeps you dry and warm. No drafts up the bottom or up the arms. All in all great warmth, lightweight, and mobile. Perfect for athletic outdoor activity. The downfall of this jacket is the zipper. Front pocket zipper broke after 8wks of light use. Main zipper, as mentioned by other reviewer is stiff and I fear may also break. For the cost of the jacket I would have expected the zippers to be more sturdy and durable. Hope to get it repaired quickly so I can use it for a big snowboard trip coming up.

I've had this jacket for about two weeks now, and am impressed by the workmanship and function of the product. The fit is accurate for the sizing. I'm 6'2, 185 and the xl is the correct size for me. As advertised, the jacket provides good warmth for its weight, and allows great movement which makes this a good jacket for active folks. Only criticism I have is that the zipper is a bit stiff - perhaps it will loosen with time. Otherwise, this is a top-notch product that I would definitely recommend for cold weather activities.
I would recommend this product.

The quality of this jacket is not up for debate. It is sturdy, comfortable, warm, dry, and stylish. My only problem with the jacket is its size. I am 6'3 and I weigh 160 lbs. I took my measurements as best as I could with a piece of string and a regular 8.5'' x 11'' piece of paper. The arm length, and wear the jacket falls at my waist are great. However, I did not expect for the jacket's waist circumference to be so large.
Although the jacket does have straps at the skirt to tighten it, doing so leaves a bulk of fabric at the waist because I do not have the body mass to fill it. It is as if they were expecting only people with huge beer guts to buy the jacket.
While it might not be a big deal for some, I bought this jacket expecting it to be more snug, like my medium mountain hardwear rain jacket, but it is not. So if you have some meat on your bones I would not be too concerned.
I would recommend this product.

Thanks for the comment and review. Did you end up buying the medium then? I'm 6'1 170lbs, so figuring out best fit. Thanks!
