I purchased almost every mitten MHW sells because I couldn't decide based on the descriptions. I bought the Nilas, Masherbrum, Chawa, and the Jalapeño. I wanted something warm, but lightweight. I did not let price play a factor because they are all so closely priced. I ended up keeping the Nilas and the Chawa. I chose the Chawa over the others for several reasons.
I didn't choose the Jalapeño because they didn't seem to be sturdy enough. The palm and backside didn't have enough reinforcement. I'm sure they are well built, but I wanted a pair of mittens that I could use while doing tasks with my hands, tasks that would wear through the palms of many mittens (i.e. mountaineering, shoveling show, cutting down a Christmas tree, hauling wood, etc.). The Masherbrum were the thickest/warmest but the palms were not reinforced with the extra skin that the Chawa has. Also, the insulation was almost over the top to the point of losing all dexterity.
My big concern with the Chawa before I ordered was the zipper cuffs. Once I had them I realized that I could use them over my jacket if I didn't zip them up and under my jacket with them zipped. The insulation is wool, so they are very warm without getting too thick. Of all four, these have more of the animal skin reinforcement and plenty of insulation while maintaining dexterity.
While I settled on the Chawas for wear without another glove underneath, maybe just a thin liner glove, the Nilas ones work better if you want to slip on some mittens over your gloves, but only when you don't plan on doing anything with your hands (Nilas mittens don't have a very thick material on the palm that you would easily wear through).
As for sizing, I ordered a large and xL in each. What I learned is that for these mittens to be used as I described above, you simply need to order the size that you would normally buy in gloves. For me that is size large. Even with the xL Chawa, I could not managed to fit my thicker gloves inside the Chawa mittens. The large in the Nilas did allow me to do so.
As for weight, the Chawas are right at 10 oz. They are incredibly well built, include lots of animal skin reinforcement, and very warm for little more than .5 lbs per pair. The Masherbrum mittens are much heavier and do not have as durable of a palm. Being light, warm, durable and waterproof, what's not to like about the Chawas.
I hope this helps those like me that can't decide on which pair of mittens to choose based solely on the descriptions -- especially with MHW's large selection of mittens.
I would recommend this product.

Ridiculously large and bulky. Only use would be snowmobiling or at the North Pole. Not functional for any other use.
I do not recommend this product.

As soon as I put these mittens on, I liked everything about them. They have great insulation, seem to be of exceptional quality, and are a perfect fit for hands doing any kind of cold-weather activity. I haven't had a chance to try them skiing yet, but I expect they'll be perfect for days on the slopes when my gloves won't quite be warm enough. The wrist zippers are actually a nice touch, allowing the option to leave them unzipped, or zip them shut to clamp down the mittens a bit. As always, the nose-wipe on the thumbs are a must; I don't know how or why MHW elects to leave them off of some gloves, but they're always needed. I got the gold color, which looks very sharp. The design and detailing are top quality. I usually wear a L in gloves, but I went with the XL in these mitts and I think it was the best choice. Not to say the L would've been bad, but I wanted a little room and these feel perfect. Would definitely recommend them.
I would recommend this product.
