I have just returned from my first trip with this tent to Scotland. The tent was used on several exposed hills at around 2000ft as well as some lower altitude / sheltered locations. I found this tent to be completely unsuitable for UK / European weather. We did not have particularly heavy or persistent rain on this trip, just the occasional shower now and again. However, due to the way this tent is designed and the materials used, it proved impossible to keep equipment dry, and by the end of the trip my down sleeping bag was completely saturated along with pretty much everything else. The tent provides no shelter whatsoever for cooking in snow or rain – attempting to do so inevitably leads to the sealed inner filling with water and/or snow (which will then melt).
If the vents are open, a considerable amount of cold wind can blow through the tent (making it far colder than even a cheap double walled tent). If the vents are closed, condensation build up is considerable to the point that pools of water formed from drips from the roof. The material may well be breathable, but, the performance is notably impaired once the outside of the tent is wet from rain etc; the build-up of condensation and pools of water inside the sleeping area accelerates.
I fully accept this tent may perform well at 8000m+, and as other reviewers have noted it has originally been designed specifically for this purpose. However, the purpose of my review is simply to comment on the fact that it is an exceptionally bad choice for any kind/season of camping in the UK and, I would expect, any climate in which rain is a possibility.
I have in the past used various other comparable geodesic/semi-geodesic tents, including a Hilleberg Jannu, Tarra and Savio, as well as a Terra Nova Quasar and a Force 10 Vortex 200 – all of which have performed significantly better.
I do not recommend this product.

Wrong choice for rain...
Posted December 20, 2013
You did make a wrong choice for your tent. You should have chosen a tent that is a double wall instead of a single wall. Single wall tents are designed mainly for high altitude adventures in colder environments that does involve rain. So for others reading the review I would say that the tent is an amazing tent just simply not built for rain. I would not hesitate to purchase another Mtn Hardwear tent for high altitude adventures.

This tent is everything I expected except that it is described with an internal guy system to reduce noise and add support. There is no internal guy system in the EV3. The owners manual misrepresents the tent and should be revised. It was also very difficult to confirm this missing feature with Mountain Hardwear.
I would recommend this product.

Used it at about 12,000 ft the night before climbing Mt. Princeton. Dropped into the 30's. Ventilation was great, tent was great. Worth the money! If you need a bomber back country tent this one's for you. If you need something for car camping or warm conditions at lower elevations, save your money and look at one of MHW's other tents.
I would recommend this product.

Well folks, yeah it's expensive. But it surely is worth it. Little understood is that this tent is designed by Ed Viestures himself (EV). If that doesnt say something I don't know what will. I have used this tent and it is ready for the Himalayas. So if you're using it like I am and climbing at Rainier, and the Colorado 14'ers, then this will do everything you need and then some. The weight to strength ratio on this thing is amazing! Its only 7lbs! Lets get real, a TRUE 3 man, 4 season tent under 8lbs? Im in! if you're looking for something serious, that you never have to worry about, get it.
I would recommend this product.

Took this out for the first time in The Kings Canyon/Sequoia NP for a five day four night excursion. This tent was more than I needed for this years conditions but it's the best tent I've had from MH to date. Heavy rain didn't penetrate the no fly double laminate and although the tent would be better if it had mosquito netting, this tent is incredible. I'll have to take it back into the NW earlier next spring when there is more snow. Expeditions would be pleased with the roominess, the open zipper bottom, (which I assume is for cooking when you're at altitude during a storm,) the four zipper windows, and the room available in this product.
