My Hammerhead II is a 2002 version that I purchased from REI. Today I still use it as my main tent for 3+ seasons. Excellent in snow, rain, and wind. Talking about the strong wind, this tent holds very well against the wind. I think it is because of the third pole to make the tent very sturdy.
I love the privacy of this tent when I need to change clothes by zipping the wall up without having the fly on.
I also love the huge wall that I can unzip it like a large window looking out in front and looking up on top to see the sky at night. The breeze coming in the tent from the large screen into the medium window behind me is just perfect.
There is plenty of room to put my backpack and gadgets on the floor. The only thing that I am still looking for is a canopy so I can hang my candle lantern and gadgets above me. There are some hooks on top tent, but too close to tent screen that I can't hang my candle lantern there.
I love the fly window to check outside to see if there is snow or lot of rain. That design is very brilliant! Perfect for 4 season in the snow.
I have mine for 12 years and have no problem with wear and tear. Very high quality. You pay for what you get. This tent I will never get rid of until it dies on me.
I would recommend this product.

I've had this tent for 8 years and have taken it camping all over the world. I've taken it on multiple Colorado 14er's, used it on the snowfields of Rainier, on the desert sands of SW US, and on the humid coasts. It's amazing in any environment and holds up amazingly well. I have had zero issues with it. It works as a solid 4-season tent and has withstood 60+ mph winds on multiple occasions (at 13k ft and on Lake Powell).
This tent will last.
I would recommend this product.

I have to say that I really liked this tent. The Hammerhead 2 has a lot more features than any of the other tents I looked as in it's class, including tents from REI, MSR, and Big Agnes.
Likes: The #1 best feature about this tent is removable solid tent walls. I think that makes this one of the best year round (or at least 3+ season) tents you will find anywhere. When I go camping with a group, I often skip the rainfly on warm, clear evenings. But when it's time to change clothes, most tents leave you exposed with sheer net walls. The Hammerhead 2 lets you zip up the interior solid wall of the tent when you want it, and unzip when you don't. Genius. The materials are top notch and lightweight. There is a good amount of room. The shape of the tent makes the amount of internal space deceptive. The length is not as long as many tents, or as wide at the head and foot. But the middle of the tent widens out at the sides, giving you more room for changing clothes, tying shoes, or for you equipment. Another like is that the footprint (not included) comes with small bungie clips to hold the poles together tightly during a fast pitch setup. I don't foresee ever using this fly without the tent, but I would definitely fast pitch the fly in the rain, then bring the dry tent underneath the fly and clip it to the poles...giving me a dry tent.
Dislikes: The size of this tent is just average. You can get a tent with more usable room and larger vestibles for a lot less money and the same weight. The Hammerhead 2 has better features, but it's a tradeoff. The pole setup is a bit clumsy compared to other tents. After clipping the poles into the footprint and/or tent grommets, you'll have to hold the 3 poles together until you clip the tent to the 2 pole junctions. It takes some practice. My biggest gripe with the Hammerhead 2 is that it no longer has vents in the fly (even though some pictures online still show it). These vents are important, especially in the winter or when camping in wet areas, to allow your warm moist air to escape so that your fly and tent do not condensate as much. I don't know why they got rid of this feature, but most tent manufacturers are adding them. A real disappointment.
All in all, I really like this tent. I did return it, however, in favor of a much lighter ultralight tent for a lot more money and half the features. But if I had not decided to go ultralight, it would have been a very tough decision between the Hammerhead 2 and the REI Half Dome 2+. Bring back the fly vents!
I would recommend this product.

I have had 2 Hammerhead 2's now, and will continue to buy and use them until MH stops making them! Great for most seasons here in the South, plenty of ventilation!
I would recommend this product.

I just did an 18 day rafting trip on the Grand Canyon and this tent was my home. Easy to set up and easy to pack up. We ran into some of the famous strong winds in the canyon. I watched other peoples tents almost get flattened by the wind as well as hear them flapping all night. I was very impressed with how sturdy this tent was. Great tent! I highly recommend buying this tent.
I would recommend this product.

Best All Around
Posted August 17, 2012
This is the best tent I own, and I have 6 tents from REI.
This tent has a great rain fly, that stays away from the tent keeping the moisture further away than most tents do.
This tent also has a ton of mesh screen keeping it very well ventilated. And to top that off, there is a cover on ALL of the screens so they can be zipped closed for added warmth out in the boondocks or for full privacy in a crowded campground. I've not seen any other tent with this feature.
I usually dont need to bring the rain fly since it all can be sealed up, making it even lighter.
The 2 vestibules provide more space than 99% of equivalent 2 man tents.
I have used it a lot over the last 6-7 years. In Mexico, Arizona, Utah, Montana and all over California and it has held up very well.
I have not encountered any problems with it yet. The zippers still work perfectly, no tears in the screen, all the seams are still sealed and tightly sewn.
Having a full view of the starry night or being completely sealed up and cozy inside is the range of options this tent provides.
And it will be one of the easiest tents you've set up.
Still my most favorite tent.
